SELIGER GUEST HOUSE

Lake Seliger, Russia
2024

The guest house is conceived as a quiet retreat within the natural landscape surrounding Lake Seliger. The architecture and interior are designed to create a calm and restrained environment where space, light, and material establish a direct relationship with the surrounding nature.

The interior is organized as a simple open volume with a pitched ceiling that enhances the vertical dimension of the space. Large openings connect the interior with the landscape, allowing natural light to enter while framing views toward the forest and lake.

Materials play a central role in the spatial atmosphere. Rough stone elements, minimally processed wood surfaces, and natural plaster walls create a tactile architectural language that reflects the character of the surrounding landscape.

Furniture and architectural elements are intentionally reduced to essential forms. Stone benches, wooden platforms, and simple lighting fixtures reinforce the restrained character of the interior while maintaining a strong material presence.

The project explores architecture as a place of quiet habitation — a space where minimal intervention, natural materials, and controlled light create a calm environment integrated with the landscape of Lake Seliger.

LAKE SELIGER

Lake Seliger is located within the Valdai Hills in northwestern Russia and forms one of the region’s most distinctive natural landscapes. The area is characterized by dense forests, sandy shores, and a complex system of interconnected lakes created by glacial formations.

The spatial character of Seliger is defined by the relationship between water, forest, and scattered settlements. Numerous islands, channels, and quiet bays create a layered landscape where architecture appears as small volumes integrated within the surrounding natural environment.
